Event // Foraging for Martinis

“There’s something about the distinguished eccentricity, the humorless comedy and the colorful melancholy that pervades the many rooms of 111 Archer Avenue in Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums that has fascinated cinephiles since its release in the early 2000s. The story of the once prolific Tenenbaum family and their struggle to both maintain their once-lauded success and move forward with their present lives is the 21st century answer to Salinger’s Glass family, Kaufman’s Cavendishes and Coward’s Bliss family — a lineage of eclectic, self-absorbed, yet utterly charming dramatis personae, all suffering under one roof and driving each other a little bit insane.

With such ridiculous characters as these, the Tenenbaums make for an excellent theme party catalyst, which is exactly what inspired a Tenenbaum-style cocktail hour hosted by Pierrepont Hicks and Forage Modern Workshop in early May. The two Minnesota tastemakers played host to a swarm of girls in Lacoste tennis dresses and heavy eyeliner, a la Gwyneth Paltrow’s swarthy middle-child Margot Tenenbaum, a smattering of fringed jackets and cowboy hats in tribute to Owen Wilson’s gunslinger novelist Eli Cash, and innumerable touches of Andersonalia — thick glasses, heavy tweed, earthtoned color schemes and old school styling.

These Tenenbaumed party goers sipped martinis from vintage glasses and wandered the various spaces of Forage Modern Workshop, which had been transformed into character-centric zones for the party. The bar — a bookcase filled with stacks of National Geographics — was canopied by a tent and backdropped with a javelina bust and a chalkboard outlining the three Tenenbaum children’s various schedules — Margot, ballet at 3; Richie, tennis match at noon; Chaz, simply “Business” twenty-four-seven. Around the corner was Margot’s room, complete with Scalamandre-esque zebra wallpaper, wooden African masks adorning the walls, and such tiny details as a pink glove with the index finger snipped off and a spotted Dalmatian mouse cowering next to a copy of Three Plays by Margot Tenenbaum. The Clash, Nico and the Ramones underscored the event. It wasn’t hard to agree with Owen Wilson’s confession near the end of the film, “I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum, you know?” And for a few hours, we got to be.”

The 11th Annual Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Brunch and Fashion show filled the Big Bowl Courtyard in the Galleria Edina this Sunday. Breast cancer supporters and survivors filled the tables to commemorate those lost to the disease and take action to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. The brunch closed with a fashion show with spring styles from the Galleria that almost made it feel like the sun was shining for a moment…we’re almost there, right?

Window treatments are the finishing touch to an interior space. Without them a room often looks bare and empty. Even when they aren’t a functional necessity, the added design detailing, warmth and tactile appeal that fabric treatments contribute often means the difference between a space feeling complete or not. There are many different kinds of window treatments, each bringing a different vibe to the room and adding to the overall effect.

1. For a more masculine effect, a heavy fabric such as wool flannel with a strong tapestry border conveys a richly tailored look.

2. A special detail at the top catches the eye and sets the stylistic tone. Pinch pleats are the typical. Try smocked, ball-gown, or tulip headers for couture styling.

3. Combinations of windows, large and small, pose a common dilemma. Combining drapery on French doors with smaller shades on adjacent windows works well. The tops do not necessarily have to align with each other either, but keep the fabric the same for both so they flow nicely.

4. Roman or balloon style shades provide a great opportunity for a dangling trim at bottom to outline the hem. Drapery can be trimmed at the leading edge or hem.

5. Even as experienced professionals, we always do detailed sketches to “prove out” our design concept. A quick way to do this is to snap a photo of the window area, print it at 8 x 10 inch size and place tracing paper over it to try different treatments.

A Little Spring in Your Step

So, unless you’ve never left your house this month, you’re fairly aware that the weather outside is nothing short of horrific. The snow, sleet, and rain make it a rare occurrence when the sun decides to show its face for a moment or two, and expectations of spring are being dashed anytime you look out a window. And unless you’re into grey, disgusting weather (maybe you are?) you’re complaining right along with everyone else.

We’ve been moaning and groaning around the office all week, and yesterday we stomped our snowy rain boots down and decided to stop whining and do something about it! Here’s five ways to pretend it’s spring and beat the nasty-weather blues.

1. Throw on some bright colors. Wearing some pastels, neons, or jewel tones can fool your eyes into feeling like the weather is warm, meaning that we’re stepping into the office today with bare ankles and colorfully striped shirts underneath blazers. It’s kind of like reverse psychology on yourself?

2. Treat yourself. We’re no experts, but we are pretty sure it is scientifically proven that lack of sunshine negatively affects your mood. So instead of snapping or allowing the grey to infiltrate your day, schedule a massage or a pedicure to give yourself something to look forward to. Best of all, Juut is having a 20% off sale this week for all of their incredibly smelling products- at home spa day, anyone?
